MERRY CHRISTMAS DAY

First broadcast on www.provet.co.uk

This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only.

You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet.

Don't give your pet the remains of your Turkey, Duck, Goose, Cockerel, Pheasant, Partridge, Quail or any other bird carcass this Xmas !

Birds have hollow bones which fracture into small splinters very easily. These can cause all sorts of trouble for your pet including :

  • They get stuck on teeth causing discomfort, and  preventing eating
  • They can cause damage throughout the gastrointestinal tract  if they are swallowed
  • They can cause vomiting if they inflame the stomach wall
  • They can get stuck in the gullet, or intestinal tract  - causing vomiting, depression and abdominal pain
  • If they penetrate through the wall of the gullet (oesophagus) they can cause life-threatening infection in the chest
  • If they penetrate through the intestinal wall they can cause life-threatening peritonitis
  • If they reach the large intestine and haven't been digested they can cause constipation, and
  • They can cause pain when your pet tries to defaecate.
  • Sometimes fresh blood will be passed in faeces if the sharp bones damage the lining of the colon and rectum.

Sometimes eating a bird carcass will cause no trouble at all - but almost every veterinarian has seen the serious consequences - so save your pet the discomfort - and yourself the financial pain - DON'T FEED bird carcasses this Festive Season

Have a Great Day from Provet
