Neoplasia is a commonly used term but what does it mean ? Neoplasia literally means "new" (neo-) growth (-plasia). It is a word used to describe an abnormal new growth of tissue - ie a tumour or a cancer . A tumour literally means a swelling - and although usually used to describe a neoplasm or cancer it can be used to describe any solid swelling not caused by inflammation Cancer is the term used to describe a range of different types of neoplasms, and it is a term usually used to describe malignant neoplasms - ie those that are likely to spread within the body.
