Provet would like to hear YOUR VIEWS about the Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999.

The new Act (which applies to dog breeding premises registered with local authorities in the UK) came into force on January 1st 2000, and under this Act :

  • Bitches on licensed breeding premises can not be mated until they are 12 months old
  • Bitches can only have a maximum of 6 litters in their lifetime
  • Bitches can only give birth at least 12 months after a previous litter
  • Puppies can not leave the premises to go to their new home until they are at least 8 weeks old
  • It is an offence to acquire a puppy from an unlicensed dealer for resale
  • It is an offence to sell a puppy to an unlicensed dealer for resale

These regulations have been designed to ensure the welfare of animals kept in breeding establishments.
