This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only. You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet. Different breeds of dog use their senses in different ways - some rely more on smell than sight or hearing than others - but which breeds have the best vision ? Provet is not sure if anyone can scientifically determine the breed of dog with the "best" eyesight because the definition of "best" could depend upon several factors, including :
In general terms dogs with the "best" eyesight are probably the so-called "sight hounds". These are dogs which have evolved to hunt animals by sight - and they can be recognised by the fact that their eyes are relatively close together at the front of their heads - examples being greyhounds, borzois, afghans, whippets, deerhounds, wolfhounds, etc. These breeds are also built for speed with long legs and sleek bodies for running and catching prey.
