Idiopathic tremors are sometimes seen in old dogs and can present a diagnostic challenge Idiopathic tremor is a well recognised syndrome which starts as a progressive tremor that initially involves the hind legs, but progresses to involve the front legs. It is most often noticed while the animal is standing still, and it may disappear when the dog moves. It is particularly seen in Terrier breeds - and notably Airedales and Wire-haired fox terriers. Neurological examination is normal although the tremors may get worse during an examination or during periods of excitement. Treatment is not usually recommended but it is important to try to determine the underlying cause, and the differential diagnosis list includes :
