First broadcast on www.provet.co.uk on March 15th 2000.

This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only.

You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet.

Next month Provet will be launching RemoteVet - telemedicine for veterinarians in the UK and Europe so that they can linking to the rest of the world across the Internet.

Telemedicine is the transmission of medical information using modern technology. RemoteVet (based in the USA)  have pioneered the use of computers for the transmission of text and high quality medical images across the Internet, and at the British Small Animal Veterinary Congress held in Birmingham in April Provet will be launching the service in Europe.

What does this mean ? Well, it means that if a veterinarian has a difficult case he or she can send all the clinical history...including images such as XRays, and even moving images such as ultrasound pictures ....to a specialist in the field for a second opinion and advice on how best to manage the case. European veterinary referral practices (who have specialists on staff) can also join in the network and provide their services more efficiently to many more of their colleagues.

In the USA approximately 700 practices are already on the network and they regularly refer cases to Board Certified Specialists who provide a 24 hour on-call service in all the main speciality clinical subjects . During the Year 2000 Provet will be linking up progressive practices in the UK and Europe to the network so that pets with complicated disorders can be treated more effectively, and quickly.
