Abortion is not very common in dogs, but when it does occur it is important to try to ascertain the underlying cause

There are many possible causes of abortion which have been documented to occur, or which are thought to occur in dogs (all listed alphabetically) :

Bacterial infections

Viral infections

  • Canine adenovirus
  • Canine distemper virus
  • Canine herpesvirus
  • Canine parvovirus

Other infections 

  • Mycoplasma
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Ureaplasma

Non-infectious causes

  • Chronic endometrial hyperplasia
  • ? Fetal deformity
  • ?Hypothyroidism
  • Manganese deficiency
  • ? Progesterone deficiency - not confirmed
  • Trauma
  • ?Toxins
