Frusemide is a widely used drug in veterinary practice. This drug can significantly affect laboratory results making interpretation difficult

Frusemide, a potent diuretic - may affect a variety of laboratory results including the following :

  • Haematology
    • Decreased platelet count - sometimes
  • Blood Chemistry
    • Increased carbon dioxide
    • Decreased chloride
    • Decreased potassium
    • Decreased sodium
  • Urinalysis
    • Decreased pH (making it acidic)

These changes should be borne in mind when interpreting the laboratory results of  samples taken from animals receiving frusemide therapy.
