SERUM FOLATE TEST

Description

Folate is manufactured by bacteria in the intestine and it is absorbed in the upper small intestine.

If there are large numbers of bacteria present in the gut lumen, as occurs in bacterial overgrowth, high serum concentrations of folate can result.

Serum folate concentrations will be low in the presence of upper small intestine disease.

Normal canine serum contains 7.5-17.5 µg folate /L when determined by competitive-binding assay.
