In 1976 the National Veterinary Toxicology Information Centre (Centre National d'Informations Toxicologiques Veterinaires) was established at the Veterinary School in Lyons (Ecole Nationale Veterinaire de Lyon). The formation of this specialized veterinary unit was spurred by the concerns of many members of the French veterinary and agricultural professions over the dearth of information in the field of veterinary toxicology, especially where large animals were involved.

The centre provides an immediately accessible information service (either by telephone or in writing) in the field of clinical veterinary toxicology. Its aims are to:
