Monstera deliciosa (Mexican breadfruit, Swiss cheese plant, breadfruit tree).
A member of the plant family ARACEAE. Climbing plant with large, dark green glossy
leaves with characteristic holes or slit in the margins. Aerial roots appear and
grow from the stem. Very popular, ornamental house plant.
Animals most affected
Chewing and/or ingestion of leaves.
The sap of the stem and leaves contains crystals of calcium oxalate and a proteolytic
enzyme with irritant properties.
Generally only signs of local irritation of the lips and buccal mucosae, with oedema
and mild salivation. Generally good prognosis within several hours of exposure.
Congestion of buccal and labial mucosae.
No antidote. Symptomatic care only:
thorough washing of the mucosae with copious amounts of water.
