Animals most affected
Dogs, cats, (cattle, sheep).
Ingestion of preparations containing ferrous sulphate, widely used to remove moss
from lawns. Available commercially in the form of granules, crystals and water-soluble
powders. Minor incidents have resulted from animals walking on grass treated according
to manufacturers' instructions.
Toxic doses poorly understood; by mouth in mg/kg:
orange-yellow discoloration of buccal mucosae and lips.
(If large quantities ingested):
after a latent period of several hours, collapse;
severe shock, coma.
Generally favourable outcome.
oedema and erosions, progressing to ulceration of the stomach;
orange staining of the gastric mucosae;
degeneration of the liver.
In severe cases only:
Desferrioxamine (Desferal) im, or by slow iv infusion; dosage: 20mg/kg im or
15 mg/kg per hour iv, to a maximum of 80mg/kg in any 24 hours.
Gastric demulcents or aluminium gels, antacids;
Cardiorespiratory stimulants, if indicated.
