A colourless, alkaline gas with a pungent odour and acrid taste, soluble in water.
Animals most affected
Gas produced by decomposition of organic matter; or ammonium salts (such as fertilizers).
Poisoning is most often a result of poor or inadequate ventilation.
Irritant gas. Toxic doses not well established:
- fall in egg production;
- secondary respiratory infections.
- pulmonary oedema with congestion.
- ensure adequate ventilation of the hen house.
