Routine testing followed by removal of any FeLV-infected cats has enabled many colonies to eradicate infection. The protocol used is fairly simple and not too expensive.
- Test all cats, and separate FeLV positive from negative; no additions to either group, and disinfect housing, etc.
- Retest after 12 weeks - remove all positives (kill or rehouse).
- Retest all cats every 6-12 months.
- Test, isolate for 12 weeks and retest all introductions to colony.
