The role of antibody in the pathogenesis of FIP is complex. Local antibody in the gut appears to be protective but, experimentally at least, circulating, humoral IgG may cause enhancement of disease. The mechanism of antibody enhancement is not known, although it may involve antibody-mediated opsonisation without inactivation of the virus. This would increase the amount of virus which gets into macrophages, which are one of the major target cells for virus infection.
