Trichosporon spp are saprophytes found in the soil and as part of the normal skin and mucosal flora of many animals. Disease is thought to be secondary to immunosuppression or primary damage to skin or mucosae.
Trichosporosis is a rare cause of disease in cats; clinical signs usually consist of suppurative or granulomatous lesions of mucosae or subcutaneous tissues.
Diagnosis is based on culture and demonstration of the organism in lesions by histopathology.
Treatment is with ketoconazole.
