Found in soil world-wide, Histoplasma capsulatum infections are mainly a clinical problem in North America.

Causes pulmonary and systemic disease in cats, but in dogs the clinical signs are more often associated with systemic and gastrointestinal infection. Diagnosis is usually by cytology of smears or histopathological examination. Treatment is with ketoconazole (10-15 mg/kg orally twice daily for 4-6 months).
