Caused by Ehrlichia platys and transmitted by ticks, ICT is seen mainly in the southern USA and southern Europe. Cycles of parasitaemia and thrombocytopenia at 1 to 2 week intervals may cause:
- mild anaemia
- haemorrhage and depression
- cause no clinical disease.
- Diagnosis is by blood smears (rickettsia seen in platelets) and serology.
- Treatment is with tetracycline or doxycycline.
