Q.fever is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a rickettsia. Although, like other rickettsiae, C. burnetii can be transmitted between and from ticks, C. burnetii can be maintained in wild and domestic animal populations by ingestion and inhalation of infectious material such as placentas, urine and faeces.
