LYME DISEASE DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis based on a combination of clinical signs and serology. Isolation of the spirochete is difficult and some laboratories use PCR to detect the organism.

It is very important not to confuse present or past infection, as detected by antibody tests, with evidence of disease. In Western Europe, at least, serological evidence of infection in cats and dogs is quite common in some areas but clinical disease is extremely rare.
