SALMONELLOSIS: PUBLIC HEALTH ASPECTS

The source of infection in cats and dogs is often difficult to determine but is probably generally similar to that in humans, e.g. contaminated food, particularly meat products. An exception to this is salmonellosis in kittens acquired from hunting or scavenging wild birds. Although transmission to man is possible, a common source of infection is perhaps more likely when salmonellae are isolated from both owners and their cat or dog.
