Abscesses and cellulitis are probably the most common infections encountered in cats. They are mostly due to bites and scratches from fighting with other cats, or occasionally with rodents. The possibility of foreign bodies, including grass seed-heads and airgun pellets, should also be investigated.
As might be expected, bite abscesses are more common in males, particularly non-castrated males, than in females and are more common in cats which roam rather than those kept in the house.
