• Astroviruses are small RNA viruses with a characteristic five- or six-pointed star-shaped morphology.
• Little has been published on the epidemiology or clinical significance of feline infection. One report suggests that less than 10% cats in the UK have antibody.
• Green and watery diarrhoea lasting 4-14 days, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, pyrexia and depression.
• Diagnosis is by electron microscopy of faeces.
• Treatment is symptomatic.
