LEPTOSPIROSIS TREATMENT
Anti-biotic therapy:
-
Penicillin G (25 mg/kg IV or IM twice daily) or ampicillin (10 mg/kg IV, IM or
-
SC twice daily, or 10-20 mg/kg orally three times daily) for 2 weeks to control
-
bacteraemia.
-
Dihydrostreptomycin (15 mg/kg, IM or SC twice daily) for 2 weeks to eliminate
renal infection. Only use streptomycin once renal function has returned
to normal.
Supportive therapy, including rehydration and/or blood transfusion can be necessary,
and possibly diuretics or even peritoneal dialysis in persistently oliguric animals.
Appropriate low-protein diets can help in the management of renal failure.
