The susceptibility of animals to rabies virus varies a great deal and depends on factors such as:
- the animal species
- its genetic make-up
- he age of the animal
- the virus strain (biotype)
- the virus dose
- the route of exposure.
For example, a deep, heavily contaminated wound in the head region in a young animal is more likely to lead to disease, with a shorter incubation period, than an older animal with a superficial wound on the extremities.
