- Laboratory diagnosis is based on isolation of virus from nasal secretions, blood urine, or affected tissues at necropsy. Microscopic examination of liver reveals a characteristic pattern of tissue damage and intranuclear inclusion bodies in infected hepatocytes.
- Acetone-fixed sections or tissue imprints can enable rapid diagnosis immunofluorescence staining.
- Affected dogs are often leucopenic and have elevated liver enzymes.
