Systemic inoculation of both live and killed CCV vaccines induces the development of serum virus neutralising antibody. Such vaccines generally do not appear to provide much protection against infection, but protection against disease is difficult to assess as experimentally inoculated dogs seldom develop significant clinical disease.
- No vaccines are available in the UK.
- Inactivated vaccines are available in some parts of Europe and the USA.
- A live vaccine sold in the USA was withdrawn following reports of a pancreatitis/meningitis syndrome associated with its use, although the precise cause of this syndrome was not determined.
- Other live attenuated vaccines have been recently developed and these may provide better protection against both infection and disease than inactivated vaccines.
