Diagnosis of campylobacteriosis

Campylobacter spp organisms may survive for up to 3 days in faecal material

However, fresh faecal samples should be examined at the earliest possible opportunity in order to increase the possibility of making a definitive diagnosis.

C. jejuni may be visualised using either dark-field or phase-contrast light microscopy.

Isolation may also be attempted on blood-agar plates in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere.
