FELINE SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPATHY
PUBLIC HEALTH ASPECTS
The risk of human infection from affected cats is not known, as the
causative agent and its relationship to the causes of spongiform encephalopathy in
other species are not known. Even if the agent is infectious to man, it is highly
unlikely that a live cat could be a source of human infection. However, it would
be prudent to handle all tissues taken post mortem from suspect cases with extreme
care. FSE is a notifiable disease in the UK.
