FELINE SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPATHY
PATHOGENESIS
-
The routes of infection in cats are not known, although in other
species transplacental spread and skin inoculation can all occur.
-
The most likely route of feline infection is probably oral, with
food as the most likely source of FSE agent.
-
The time between inoculation and the development of disease in
cats is not yet known, nor is it known what tissues other than CNS the infectious
agent may be found in. It is not known if transplacental or other routes of
cat-to-cat transmission can occur.
