Three types of vaccine are available in the UK for the protection of cats against viral upper respiratory disease:
- Attenuated live vaccines given systemically.
- Attenuated live vaccine given intranasally.
- Inactivated, adjuvanted vaccines given systemically.
See a table giving the advantages and disadvantages of the different vaccines.
Genetically engineered strains of FHV have also been developed for use as vaccines.
Although the feline respiratory virus vaccines are, in general, reasonably effective, problems do occur from time to time. It has been suggested that most problems associated with feline respiratory virus vaccines are related to FCV rather than FHV, though both do occur.
