BORDETELLA BRONCHISEPTICA EPIDEMIOLOGY
-
Infection is widespread in the cat population: a survey has shown
that over 70% of 126 cats sampled were seropositive to B. bronchiseptica
and the organism was isolated from approximately 5% of 527 cats
tested. Infection appeared to be more common in multi-cat households with a history
of respiratory disease.
-
Some seropositive animals appear to be long-term carriers of the
organism.
-
Criteria for cat-to-cat transmission is not yet established - some
animals may shed higher levels of the bacterium and be of greater epidemiological
significance
-
Inter-species transmission may be a possibility, e.g. between dogs
and cats.
