Differentiation on clinical signs alone is difficult ( see table ), and mixed infections are probably common. Bacterial isolation may be done from swabs taken from nasal discharge or from oropharyngeal secretions. Swabs should be transported in charcoal Amies transport medium and cultured on selective media such as charcoal-cephalexin agar (Oxoid, Unipath Ltd, UK).
