CONGENITAL

This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only.

You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet.

Description
(derived from con meaning together, and genitus meaning begotten).

Indicates diseases, deformities or other abnormalities that are either present at birth or, if they have a genetic inheritance from the parents, occur later in life.

It is important to realise that all congenital disorders are not caused by genetically inherited abnormalities - they may result from other causes such as trauma or exposure to toxins, infection or nutritional deficiency or excess.
