The total white blood cell count is a measure of all types of white cell. High counts (leukocytosis) are almost always due to an increased number of neutrophils (neutrophilia) which occurs in the presence of infection, lymdisorders, tissue necrosis, inflammation, hyperthyroidand as a side-effect of endogenous or exogenous steroids.

A low total white cell count (leucopenia) is usually due to neutropenia and is seen in the presence of infection (especially in early septicaemia and most of the common canine and feline viral infections), bone marrow cancer and uraemia.
