2.3.6 Electrolytes

Measurement of plasma electrolytes is helpful in cases where arrhythmias are detected. Although abnormalities are seldom detected, they may be very important if present, and usually can be treated simply. Single measurements of plasma electrolyte levels may not be as helpful as multiple samples, or fractional excretion tests which assess the way in which the body is balancing electrolytes. Fractional excretion can be estimated from the following formula:

FEE =serum creatinine x urine electrolyte

urine creatinine x serum electrolyte x 100

where FEE is the fractional excretion of the electrolyte. The normal range should be obtained from the testing laboratory
