Note: congenital lesions affecting the cardiac valves are discussed in Chapter 14 , Congenital heart disease.
Valvular heart disease is very common in the dog, but much less so in the cat. Diseases of the valves may be congenital or acquired. A summary of the primary diseases of the endocardium and valves is given in Table 11.1 . Valves may also become involved secondarily to other cardiac disease such as dilated cardiomyopathy or congenital shunts.
