The use of cough suppressants is strictly
reserved for those cases where suppressing the cough reflex will not adversely affect
the patients. Their use is contraindicated in chronic bronchitis and bronchopneumonia.
Their use should be restricted to conditions where coughing itself is adversely affecting
quality of life.
While there is some data for antitussives
in cats, their use should be avoided if at all possible.
