The term cardiomyopathy is reserved for conditions
that primarily affect the heart muscle in the absence of inflammation. Cardiomyopathy
may be classified as idiopathic (i.e. of unknown aetiology; sometimes referred to
as primary) or secondary. Idiopathic cardiomyopathy may be sub-classified on the
basis of pathological anatomy and physiology (dilated, hypertrophic, and intergrade).
These different forms will be discussed separately.
