Congenital abnormalities of the mitral and tricuspid valves are seen in both the dog and cat. The larger breed dogs appear to be more commonly affected, with a higher frequency in the Great Dane, German shepherd, Labrador retriever and Old English sheepdog (Hamlin et al., 1965; Liu & Tilley, 1976). Valvular abnormalities are also seen with endocardial cushion defects in cats (see VSD).
