There are essentially two parasites of importance that parasitise the heart in small animals. Angiostrongylus vasorum, occasionally known as the French or European heartworm, and Dirofilaria immitis which is commonly referred to as 'the heartworm' - probably because of its importance in the USA and the numerous articles published on it.
